Manual Distress Evaluation

  •  Identify distresses in pavement section, quantify area/length, note severity

Note: Items in purple boxes were not considered in the distress evaluation. Explanation is next to box.

  • List distresses in a table like the one pictured below:
  • TOTAL = Sum the distresses, either in length (for Transverse/Longitudinal Cracking) or in area (Fatigue Cracking)
  • DENSITY % = Total/(Section Area) * 100%
  • Deduct Value:  See next section, PCI Calculations, Figure X3.1

PCI Calculations

  • Step 1: Distress Quantification
  •  Step 2: Deduct Value
    • Using the figures provided in the Appendix of ASTM D 6433-07, the deduct value in the preceding table was determined:
  • Step 3: Deduct Value Adjustment
    • Using Equation 2:  m = 1 + (9/98) * (100 – 11) = 9; 1 < 9

First Iteration:      q = # deducts value > 2 = 1, TDV = 11

Note: Since q = 1, there is only 1 iteration for this section

From the figure above, it can be determined that CDV = 11.

  • Step 4: Calculation of PCI

Using Equation 3: PCI = 100 – MaxCDV = 100 – 11 = 89.

Therefore, the PCI of Section J is 89.
